Learning Filipino Language and Literature Through the Eyes of Students: A Phenomenological Study on Student Engagement and Language Skills Development at Sulu State University
Abstract
Abstract
Learning Filipino Language and Literature plays a vital role in developing students' communicative competence, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation in higher education. However, sustaining students' active engagement in the learning process remains a significant challenge, particularly in activities that require critical understanding and meaningful use of the Filipino language. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of college students in learning Filipino Language and Literature, with particular emphasis on their engagement in learning activities and the development of their language skills at Sulu State University. A phenomenological research design within the qualitative research paradigm was employed to capture the essence of the participants' experiences. Twelve (12) college students were purposively selected based on their active participation in Filipino courses. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, validated through member checking to ensure credibility, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2022) Thematic Analysis. Four major themes emerged from the analysis: (1) meaningful learning through active engagement; (2) collaborative learning as a pathway to enhancing communicative competence; (3) fostering critical thinking and literary appreciation through reflective inquiry; and (4) developing self-confidence and linguistic identity through authentic learning experiences. The findings revealed that active participation in classroom learning activities significantly enhanced students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while strengthening their appreciation of the Filipino language as a medium for academic learning, professional communication, and national identity. The study recommends strengthening student-centered pedagogical approaches, collaborative learning strategies, and authentic learning experiences to further enhance the teaching of Filipino Language and Literature in higher education.
